While subsidiarity promotes the dignity of the individual, it does so within the societal building block of the family. It is in the family where you first learn how to be in relationship with other people. This skill allows other relationships to form, such as clubs, towns, and congregations. Since these relationships weave and hold together society, subsidiarity has a focus on defending the family and ensuring that the role of the family is not usurped by higher organizations. Failure to do so would not only cause damage to the family, but also the higher organizations, because their formation was only possible due to healthy families.
